D+PH Tools & Methods Session #1

Shroom Cards

Online: 2nd October at 16:00 EEST

We got an impressive amount of answers on the Tools and Methods call. From total of 56 people, 30 are interested in sharing a tool/method/method-to-be! It’s incredibly powerful to see that we’re on to something remarkable together. The ones who expressed their interest in sharing a method, we will be in contact with you separately.

Agenda

  • Welcome
  • Introducing the D+PH Tools and Methods project
  • Workshop session #1: Shroom Cards: Ideation and Reflection through Roles and Purposes in More-Than-Human Design by Yuxi Chen and Dr. Çağlar Genç
    •  The method involves design cards illustrating different roles (e.g., humans as materials, non-humans as co-makers) and purposes (activism, collective survival, approximation) that designing with non-humans can have in design processes. It is meant for providing starting points to act out and reflect on potential roles and purposes in MtH design while creating new design ideas, as well as giving them a tool to reflect on perspectives in existing designs.

The presenters

Dr. Çağlar Genç is a Postdoctoral Researcher at the Research Centre of Gameful Realities, Tampere University. He holds a Ph.D. in Interaction Design from Koç University, İstanbul. His research focuses on posthuman design (e.g., designing with biomaterials such as fungi) and body-oriented technology design (e.g., fashionable wearables, human augmentation technologies). He currently leads PLAY-BIO, a Research Council of Finland-funded project on posthuman play with humans and other biological organisms.

Yuxi Chen is a Doctoral Researcher at the Research Centre of Gameful Realities, Tampere University. Coming from a product design background, her practice explores the entanglement of design, HCI, biomaterials and playful experiences.
